Amazon Kindle Driving Growth In The E-Book Reader Market

    March 13th, 2010 by admin

Amazon like to keep their cards pretty close to their chest when it comes to sales figures. However, Jeff Bezos recently stated that Amazon had sold “several million” of the company’s hugely successful amazon kindle e-book readers. There is no precise data, but industry analysts are suggesting a figure of around 3 million Kindles shipped to date.

Amazon have not revealed the exact number of Kindle books sold either. The somewhat enigmatic Bezos did advise that for “paid” books which were available in both paper and Kindle form, Amazon had sold 6 Kindle books for every 10 paper books. Bearing in mind that there are a lot of free Kindle books available – which are understandably very popular – the number of e-books being sold, or supplied, by Amazon seems to be pretty high.

Couple that with the fact that the Association of American Publishers (AAP) recently confirmed that sales of e-books had risen from $25.2 million in 2006 to $169.5 million in 2009 and you should start to see that the e-book sector is growing very rapidly indeed. You have to wonder if e-book readers and e-books could eventually do to “real” books what digital photography did to the SLR and Polaroid cameras.

The market is really growing very quickly. It is still in a developmental phase of course – but considering that it wasn’t – in commercial terms at least – even there before the launch of the Kindle 2.0, it’s amazing to see how quickly these readers have become mainstream. In addition to the readers and the e-books there is also a burgeoning market for kindle accessories - which will no doubt expand as other readers grow in popularity.
